TEAM

Steven Gilbertson, Managing Director

Steven has over 25 years of finance and engineering experience and has assisted public and private companies in transactions with aggregate value in excess of $30 billion. He founded Clayton East Advisors in June 2017. From late 2014 to June 2017, Steven was a Managing Director in the energy investment banking group at D.A. Davidson & Co. in Denver. From mid-2007 through late 2014, Steven held a variety of roles of increasing seniority in the investment banking group of Oppenheimer & Co. in New York City. Prior to this, he was a member of the healthcare investment banking group of WR Hambrecht + Co.


Preceding these roles, in 2003 and 2004, Steven was a Manager in Johnson & Johnson’s (Ticker: JNJ) Pharmaceutical Group Strategic Marketing division, assisting in internal and external pharmaceutical valuations. Prior to business school, Steven held process and project engineering roles with manufacturing businesses in the plastics and glass industries.  


Steven earned his BSE in chemical engineering from Princeton University and his MBA in finance from Columbia Business School.


When not in the office, Steven enjoys hiking in the Rockies, gardening, reading history, and fussing with his new dog, Roo.

Laurie Gilbertson

Laurie has over 29 years experience as a lawyer and communications expert. She launched Tribeca Blue Consulting in 2017 to help clients develop powerful and creative methods for presentations, media appearances, and in the courtroom. She served as the founding Executive Director for the Legal Entrepreneurs for Justice. Before this she founded the litigation practice at the Practising Law Institute. Previously she prosecuted securities violations for the NASD, served 10 years as a New York City ADA, and clerked for FERC. Laurie earned her BA in government at Cornell University and her JD with Honors from American University. She is licensed to practice before the Supreme Court and the bars of the States of Colorado, Maryland, and New York.

Doug Pagan

Doug has  over 25 years experience in finance and operations. Since May 2020 Doug has been the CFO of Dicerna Pharmaceuticals, a publicly-traded company. Previously, Doug served as CFO for KSQ and Paratek Pharmaceuticals and held finance roles at Acceleron Pharma, Biogen Idec, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Prior to this, he worked in healthcare investment banking for J.P. Morgan. Before business school, he worked in operational roles for Johnson & Johnson. Doug earned his BSE in chemical engineering from Princeton University and his MBA from Columbia Business School.

Tom Mullins

Tom has over 30 years of operating experience. From 2017 through 2024, former COO of WSI Enterprises, a wellhead services company. In 1996, he co-founded Synergy Operating, an E&P company. Before this he started a consulting engineering practice, Mullins Energy, Inc., that has provided services to major integrated and independent oil & gas operators. Prior to this he worked for Meridian Oil and Burlington Resources. Tom has been a member of/participated on the boards of the API (Four Corners chapter), SPE, and Four Corners Oil and Gas Conference. Tom is a past President of the IPA of New Mexico and a registered professional engineer in the discipline of petroleum engineering. Tom earned his BS in petroleum engineering from the Colorado School of Mines.

Todd Hattenbach

Todd is a finance and business development professional with over 30 years of experience. Since 2002 Todd has been an independent consultant to power and energy firms focused on acquisitions, divestitures, and financial planning & analysis, including key roles at Venoco, Inc. and Great Western Oil and Gas. Todd also served as Vice President, Finance at SFC Energy Partners, a $1 billion E&P private equity fund. Prior to this, Todd was Assistant Vice President at CoBank, ACB, where he was a credit underwriter for power and energy related assets. Todd began his energy career with Enron Corp in its Analyst and Associate program. Todd earned his BS in business administration from Trinity University and his MA in international studies from the University of Denver.
